Pink Day at SCMS

Our Annual Pink Day, organized by Mrs. Gilbert, was once a gain a HUGE success. Students bought raffle tickets to win an I-Pad Mini and donated money to wear pink. All proceeds went toward the Susan G. Komen Walk for the Cure. Once again our students, staff and community came through in a big way. Great job

Changes Are Coming

Change is good...right? Next year we are changing the tradition of mailing home Progress Reports and Report Cards with the exception of the final Report Card in June. With the advancement of technology and Skyward Parent Access, the mailing of Progress Reports and Report Cards have become redundant and expensive....hundreds of dollars, per building, per mailing. It'll take a while to get accustomed to, I just wanted to start giving people a heads up. Change is good.

SCMS Pink Day

For a $1.00 donation, students and staff are encouraged to dress in as much PINK as possible on Friday May 30th. All proceeds will be donated to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Jessie Gilbert, a St. Clair Middle School teacher, has committed herself to walk, for the fifth consecutive year, 60 miles in 3 days to help eradicate breast cancer. Mrs. Gilbert is required to raise at least $2,300 to participate. Won't you join us to help her reach her fundraising goal? To donate Click HERE then enter Jessie Gilbert

Looking For Some Summer Help to Get a Jump on Next Year

We know as parents and teachers that the bar continues to rise in education....which is a good thing. We also know that in education the key to success is reading. There is not much we can do in school or in life that reading doesn't play an important part in. Of course, in order to read and comprehend we need to understand the meaning of various words. Below are links to words that the Common Core indicates that students at each grade level should understand the meaning of. I've also listed Common Core Math Vocab. Before you look at the lists and fall out of your chair, let me tell you that the lists are aggressive...which is good. There were a number of terms that I had to take a second look at. Going over these lists with your student during the summer will pay huge dividends when school starts back in September. Make it fun. Make it a family game where every member of the family gets involved. It doesn't have to be work or painful and it's ok if your child sees that Mom and Dad don't know every term. I'm constantly looking for ways to help our students and get our families involved.....here is a GREAT way. Kindergarten First Grade Second Grade Third Grade Forth Grade Fifth Grade Sixth Grade Seventh Grade Eighth Grade Freshmen-Sophomore Junior-Senior Common Core Math Vocab

NJHS Machinac Island Trip.

On May 5th & 6th several of our NJHS students had the opportunity to visit Mackinac Island. Fortunately, the ice cleared a few days prior to the trip so we were able to take a ferry to the island. Seventeen of our students and 7 adults participated in "Academics at the Grand". This program is designed for high achieving students that show promise for future leadership. Once on the island, students and parents endured an 8 mile bike ride around the island. By mid afternoon the students were fortunate to experience a science presentation at the Grand Hotel by Chuck Gaidica, WDIV's weather meteorologist. They even made the evening Channel 4 news!!! Other activities included: a formal dinner at the Grand, an inspiration speaker, dance and an hour carriage tour, which included the history of the island. To complete the trip, the students had the opportunity to cross the bridge via motor coach and had plenty of time to purchase island souvenirs and fudge. Fun was had by all! Great kids - awesome parents! A special thanks to Mrs. Walton, our NJHS Advisor.

2014-15 Sports Physicals

Many times our current Middle School 8th grade, soon to be Freshmen Athletes don't take advantage of the SCHS early physical opportunity....it's very quick and easy.

Rumors and Life Lessons

This has the possibility to make some of you happy and others, not so much. As some of you probably heard, I applied for the Richmond Superintendent position. I received the phone call last night that they went in another direction (in other words, I came in second). The reason I'm putting this on our Blog is two fold. First reason is that I'm not trying to leave SCMS or East China. Lets be honest....I've got it made here. I've got a GREAT Staff, GREAT Kids and GREAT Parent support. The reason I applied is, at this point of my career I feel I'm ready to lead a district. I feel I have a lot to offer if given the opportunity. The second reason for this post is the life lesson part of not being selected. I have a sign in my office that states "Sometimes when you feel you've been rejected, you're really being redirected" If there is one lesson in life that we can hammer home with our kids it would be that one. Life is full of disappointments, how we handle those disappointments defines us. Please take a minute or two and have that conversation with your child. The easy path is to feel sorry for yourself, or worse yet, not to challenge yourself in a way that puts you in a position where disappointment is a possibility. When you don't get the answer you're looking for, we should pick our self up, learn from it and move forward always keeping the big picture at the forefront. I'm a very lucky man and even though the Richmond position didn't work out for me, I could not be happier to be at SCMS.
