K-9 Visitor

Today we had a surprise visitor at SCMS. The Sheriff's Department stopped by for a "Social Visit" today with one of their K-9 Units. A social visit means they asked if they could walk the building with their dog so that in case it is ever needed, the dog would be a little more familiar with our school. No lockers, bags, or classrooms were searched.

Snowday Makeup Days/Times

Because we went over the allowed number of snowdays, we have to make up some days/time. Without getting too much into the rules of what can and can't be done, here's the short version. The state doesn't count days, it counts hours (there is the first confusing point), So even though we're allowed to missed a certain number of snowday, we are really held to holding a certain number of hours. So, now that I've muddied the water, here is how the middle and elementary schools are handling it. We are having school the Monday after Easter. Our last week of school, Monday June 9th through Thursday June 12th are now full student days. Friday June 13th is now a half day for students. In addition to that, starting on Monday, April 28th, our school day will be extended 7 minutes. Our new dismissal time will be 3:26. If you have a high schooler, please check with the high school for their new adjusted schedule

Wednesday April 2nd is Autism Awareness Day

We are encouraging all staff and students to wear blue this Wednesday, April 2nd, for Autism Awareness Day. As I'm sure all parents know, the Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a range of complex neurodevelopment disorders, characterized by social impairments, communication difficulties, and restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior. Autistic disorder, sometimes called autism or classical ASD, is the most severe form of ASD, while other conditions along the spectrum include a milder form known as Asperger syndrome, and childhood disintegrative disorder and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (usually referred to as PDD-NOS). People with ASD might repeat certain behaviors again and again and might have trouble changing their daily routine. Many people with ASDs also have different ways of learning, paying attention, or reacting to things. ASDs begin before the age of 3 and last throughout a person's life. It is important to note that some people without ASDs might also have some of these symptoms. But for people with ASDs, the impairment is bad enough to make life very challenging. Although ASD varies significantly in character and severity, it occurs in all ethnic and socioeconomic groups and affects every age group. Experts estimate that 1 out of 88 children age 8 will have an ASD. As parents, we're always looking for reasons to have important life discussions with our children. Here's an opportunity.
